Creating assets and doing research to improve a game's experience (under NDA)

Introduction

During my internship period I’ve worked for Maata games. Maata games was a game company located in Arnhem. While working there I worked on a browser game project and had a hand in several parts of it. Besides making the assets and level design scenes displayed on this page, I’ve also done research and have been a part of meetings regarding the design of several mechanics of the game.

3D art and level design

As mentioned in the introduction I’ve made several 3d art pieces. In order to create these I had to do research into what they might look like in the real world during the time period in which the game is set (from around the late stone age to early medieval). Based on this research I then made sketches and concept art to base the actual assets on. Finally I created the asset, asked for feedback, and made adjustments accordingly. In order to create the level design scenes in Unreal Engine I used a similar process.

Research

Besides doing research for creating the assets, I’ve also researched relevant game UI trends, and specific game mechanics. Due to NDA I’m unable to mention the exact results of the research, but they consisted of literature studies, a competitive analysis and some stakeholder interviews.
